ENYSSA 2022-2023 State Cup Finals

ENYSSA Hosted the 2022-2023 State Cup Finals on May 21, 2023 at Randell’s Island.  It was an exciting day in which 5 Champions were crowned after the season-long State Cup Tournament concluded.

The ENYSSA State Cups are contested annually by the teams of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, Long Island Soccer Football League, Eastern District Soccer League, New York Metropolitan Soccer League, and the teams of the Eastern Premier Soccer League that are registered in Eastern New York.

The first of the 5 games that were held was for the Strumpf Cup, which is named after Peter Stumpf a long-time member of the ENYSSA Board of Directors and a Past President of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League.  The Teams that compete in the Stumpf Cup are the 3rd Division Teams of LISFL and the 3rd and 4th Division Teams of CSL.  In the matchup, Central Park Rangers Green defeated NY Albanians by a score of 3-1 to claim the Cup.

The Second Game of the day to kick-off was for the D’Arpino Cup, honoring the late Livio D’Arpino, who held many hats in ENY Soccer including 1st Vice President for both Youth and Amateur ENY State Associations until his untimely death on Christmas day, 2002.  The teams that compete in the D’Arpino Cup are the 1st and 2nd Division Reserve Teams of CSL.  The 2022-2023 edition final featured NY Ukrainians and the NY Athletic Club.  The game was thrilling and exciting and after regulation time with the score tied at 1-1, penalty kicks would decide the game by a 4-2 margin in favor of NY Ukrainians.

Shortly after, the Ann Rapaglia Cup kicked off.  The Ann Rapaglia Cup is named after the late wife of Salvatore Rapaglia, The Current and longest-serving ENYSSA President.  Ann Rapaglia was always but Sal’s side during his soccer endeavors and continuously pushed for more opportunities for women in soccer during her administrative career.  The matchup on the day featured the 1st and 2nd place teams of the NY Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League, Central Park Rangers Red Army, and Beyond FC, respectively.  It was a tightly contested game, with many scoring opportunities for both teams however after CPR Red Army went up 1-0, the floodgates opened as Beyond pushed for an equalizer.  The match ended with a 3-0 score-line in favor of CPR Red Army.

The Marth Cup final followed.  The Marth Cup, Honoring Fritz Marth, who was involved with soccer for his entire life, including holding various board potions in Hoboken 1912, CSL, ENYSSA, NJSA, USASA, and US Soccer Federation.  The Marth Cup is contested annually by the O-30 teams of the LISFL, CSL, EDSL, and any O-30 team that wishes to enter the season-long tournament.  Glen Cove prevailed in the 2022-2023 cup with a convincing performance over perennial favorites Pancyprian Freedoms.  Glen Cove jumped out to a 1-0 lead early on and never looked back as the match ended 4-1.

The feature match of the day was the Flamhaft Cup, Honoring Jack Flamhaft, a former president of the US Soccer Federation, among the numerous other potions held nationally and locally.  The teams competing in the Flamhaft Cup include the First Division Reserve Teams and 2nd Division Teams of LISFL, 2nd Division Teams of CSL, and First Division Teams of EDSL. This year’s final was not disappointing with NY Ukrainians jumping out to a 1-0 lead over a strong Kid Super Samba side midway through the first half.  Kid Super Samba had many chances to bring the match level but NY Ukrainians kept pressing and ultimately ended the match with a score of 4-0.
